Hirakud Dam : Located in Sambalpur District, on the river Mahanadi, twenty six kilometers from one end to the other Hirakud is the longest mainstream dam in the world. The major city near to Hirakud is Sambalpur.

Hirakud Dam, the world’s longest earthen dam was built in 1957. Indeed, after India’s independence this is the first river valley projected constructed as a storage reservoirs in the Mahanadi basin to deal with the problem of floods in the Mahanadi.
